Remember (from the previous post), you have more power than you think.

As I mentioned, through small, deliberate actions, you can fashion your role so that it is more and more focused on the activities you like.

Here’s how:

First, get clear on what you enjoy in the work you do. https://www.linkedin.com/posts/krisplemmonscareercoaching_careers-careersuccess-careerfulfilment-activity-6970404545357131776-p_sz?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop

Second, check in weekly with your boss. Discuss two questions about last week and two about next week.

What activities or tasks did I enjoy last week?

What activities or tasks did I not enjoy last week?

What are my priorities for this coming week?

What help do I need from you, my boss?

Avoid talking in generalities, and get specific about the tasks you enjoyed.

Research by the Mayo Clinic shows that spending a minimum of 20% of your time at work daily doing activities you enjoy significantly reduces burnout and increases performance.

When you enjoy your work (just 20% per day), you perform at higher levels, and everyone benefits! You have more power than you think. Set up your check-in this week and discuss the four questions with your boss.

And if you are in a leadership position, create these weekly check-ins with your direct reports. (Research shows a simple and consistent check-in between managers and direct reports increases team members’ engagement by 77% and decreases voluntary turnover by 67%).
